Wounds involving tissue loss may occur in various parts of the body following trauma. These cannot be closed using classic suture techniques. Such open wounds may sometimes leave bone exposed and require emergency surgery. They may sometimes be more superficial and these can be treated with dressings. Surgical techniques used in the closure of such injuries include skin flaps, local skin flaps and pedicle or free muscle and skin flaps. Bone transplantation may be required if bone tissue loss is present, depending on the size and nature of the defect. If complex repair is planned, the patient may need to be hospitalized for a time and monitored, depending on the surgical technique used.
