Facial Paralysis Repair

There are various causes of facial paralysis, which may be present from birth or else occur as a result of accidents, infection or tumor surgery. Several techniques are employed in the reconstruction of facial paralysis. The two main categories are static and dynamic techniques. The essential thing is that the appropriate technique be determined on the basis of the patient’s age, disease, general condition and expectations. There is a technique that will improve the appearance of every patient. While improving esthetic appearance, another important aim of treatment must be to correct a condition that can even lead to blindness as a result of the eyelid remaining open and to reduce deformity.

Reconstructive procedures providing almost ideal results include mild static techniques, from face lift to elevation nerve transfers (such as nerve transplantation from the tongue or a leg nerve), and dynamic techniques with muscle transplants (from the abdomen or legs) using microsurgery. This operation, which employs advanced reconstructive surgical techniques, is successful in patients selected on the basis of their expectations. For that reason, the stages and surgical content involved in the most appropriate technique, and the period after surgery should be determined following meetings between the doctor and patient.
